Why Local Pass

Why it suits a food hub

  • Built for more than one seller

Most ordering tools assume a single farm. Here one business can sell products from many farms.

  • Shoppers are already here

People use Local Pass to order local food, so your products are where they already look.

  • Your farms carry on as they are

They can keep their stalls and their own restaurant accounts. There’s no exclusivity and no minimum.

Features

Selling, delivery and pickup

  • Sell by weight

Sell lamb, pork or cheese by the pound or kilo. The customer’s card is held at checkout, and they pay for what the cut actually weighs.

  • A page for every product

Each product has its own page on Local Pass that people can find on Google.

See the shops on Local Pass
  • Delivery, shipping and pickup

Local Pass drivers or your own delivery, plus shipping and pickup points with their own hours.

  • Your units

Each product carries its own unit and price — by the dozen, the loaf, the bunch or the pound.

  • Soon to Go

Clear surplus at a discount, with a clearance badge and boosted placement.

  • Chat and reviews

Answer customers’ questions in chat and reply to their reviews.

  • Wholesale

Order sheets for restaurants and shops

You make an order sheet with your prices and give it to your buyers. They send a request. You change anything you can’t supply, then confirm it. The invoice goes out after that.

    • Each line has its own price and unit, like a case, a dozen or a kilo.
    • Make a different sheet for each kind of buyer.
    • Add a password. Until the buyer enters it, they can’t see the sheet.
    • Turn a line off for the week and keep its price.
    • Choose when invoices are due: 7, 15 or 30 days.
    • Set pickup and delivery days, how far ahead buyers must order, and a minimum order.
An example. A buyer opens a sheet, sends a request, you confirm it, and the invoice goes out. The prices are made up.
  • Producers

    Sell for many farms

You add each farm to your Producers page and put its name on its products. On localpass.ca, shoppers see “From” and the farm’s name. For each farm, you see what customers bought and what you owe.

    • Pay a farm a share of its sales, or buy from it at a cost price with purchase orders.
    • Each farm gets a statement.
    • When you pay a farm, record it and the balance updates.
    • Farms don’t need a Local Pass account.
An example. Three farms’ sales this month, what you owe each one, and a payment recorded. The farms and amounts are made up.
  • Subscriptions

    Weekly box subscriptions

Members pay by card and look after their own weeks: they can skip, swap items or pause. Each week’s boxes show up in your orders, ready to pack.

    • Weekly or every two weeks, paid each week or for the whole season.
    • See what to harvest and pack for each pickup site and for delivery.
    • Home deliveries go on your delivery routes.
    • Move the members you already have over with a spreadsheet.

  • Delivery routes

    Plan a day’s deliveries

Add your vans, then press one button. Each van gets its stops in order, for shop orders, wholesale drops and subscription deliveries. Your drivers follow the route in the Local Pass app. Customers get a message when the driver sets off, and another when they’re next.

    • Each van’s load limit, driver hours and lunch break are respected.
    • Frozen food goes on your refrigerated vans.
    • The driver app works on iPhone now. Android is coming soon.

Beyond the app

Sell on your own website too

You can sell on your own website and on Local Pass at the same time.

  • An order button, or your whole shop

Paste an order button, your whole shop or a few products into your website. Customers check out on Local Pass.

  • One place for the orders

Orders from your website and from the app arrive together, from one set of products and stock.

  • A button for your subscription box

Add a button to your website that opens your weekly box on Local Pass, where people sign up.

The business app

Packing, stock and payouts

Every tool is included — no plans to upgrade and no add-ons to buy.

  • Live orders

Accept, decline and manage incoming orders in real time on your phone or tablet.

  • Fulfilment calendar

Orders laid out by pickup and delivery date and flagged when due soon or overdue; customers get an email at each step.

  • Scan to pick

Scan each item as you pack an order — with your phone’s camera or a barcode scanner — so nothing gets missed.

  • Pack lists and labels

Print a pack list for your orders and an address label for every box.

  • Live stock counts

Stock drops with every sale and low stock is flagged; a product stops selling when you run out.

  • Spreadsheet import

Bring your whole catalogue in from a CSV file, and edit many products at once.

  • Daily payouts

Earnings go to your bank automatically every day, with statements and a sales-tax report ready to download.

  • Sales insights

Sales, top products and top customers, compared with the previous period.

An example. Orders by day, the pack list for Friday, and an address label. The orders and the address are made up.

FAQ

What food hubs ask first

What counts as a food hub on Local Pass?

A business that sells food from several farms or makers. That includes regional hubs, co-ops and box businesses that buy from neighbouring farms. You are the seller, and each product names its farm.

Do the farms I sell for need their own Local Pass accounts?

No. You add each farm to your Producers page and name it on its products. A farm that wants to sell on its own can open its own business on Local Pass too.

How do I pay the farms I sell for?

For each farm, you choose a share of its sales, or you buy its products at a cost price with purchase orders. Local Pass pays you. The Producers page keeps a running account and a statement for each farm, and you record what you pay.

Can I sell to restaurants and to households from the same stock?

Yes. Households order from your business page, and restaurants order from a wholesale order sheet. Both use the same products and stock.

Do my drivers need a separate app?

No. They use the Local Pass app, in a mode made for your business. They see the route one stop at a time, with each order’s items and notes. It works on iPhone now, and Android is coming soon.

How does Local Pass compare with software for running a food hub?

Local Line and Local Food Marketplace charge a monthly plan to run your own hub store, and bringing the shoppers is up to you. Local Pass has no monthly fee, and people on Vancouver Island already order local food on it.

The same way of selling, for a different kind of business.
